When down-at-heels lawyer Mickey Haller gets the news that his old colleague Jerry Tadashi has died, he also gets an unexpected windfall. Jerry had left instructions that Mickey should inherit all of his clients - and that means some high-profile cases that could not only get Mickey some much needed publicity but also put some serious cash in the bank. The only problem is that Jerry was murdered, and the tough-minded detective handling the case - one Harry Bosch - is convinced the killer must be one of Tadashi's clients. Suddenly Mickey has to figure out which of he cases he's now handling hides the clue to the murderer's identity, all the while knowing that going to bat for his clients could put him in exactly the same spot that earned Jerry Tadashi a bullet in the back of the head - what cops on the street would call A Brass Verdict.
