Author interview
At 30, Duncan Bannatyne had no money and was enjoying life on the beaches of Jersey. He saw a story of someone who had made himself a millionaire, and decided to do the same himself. Five years later he had done it, and now he is worth £168 million. In this remarkable book, Bannatyne relives his colourful path to riches, explaining how anyone could take the same route as he did - if they really want to. In the book, we see how he started out as an ice cream salesman, and built up that business, before moving on to other areas.Hugely articulate, and with numerous fascinating and revealing stories to tell, this is an autobiography and a business book unlike any other - but then Bannatyne isn't like any other businessman, either.
From the fieriest of dragons, self-made millionaire Duncan Bannatyne's offers his top tips for entering the den:
1. You should never let it get personal 2. You have to make your own chances 3. Ask to see the accounts 4. An entrepreneur in debt is an entrepreneur in business 5. Success depends on recognising when your moment has come 6. You can only really learn about business by being in business 7. You can run a business any way you like, but you'll run it better if you build it around your strengths 8. The government produces a leaflet for everything, so you never need to pay for an expensive consultant 9. If you're looking for a reputable company, try the guy who's named the company after himself 10. Anyone can do it!
'As a self made man, his struggles are easily identifiable and you are left wondering if you could achieve similar. David Rintoul's narration is absolutely appropriate, native accent aside, and by listening on CD as opposed to reading, Bannatyne's journey seems all the more real. His is a very interesting story indeed.'
