Example areas of work experience
As a work experience candidate with the Production Department you will participate in the physical process of transforming a manuscript and artwork into a finished book. The Production Department is responsible for producing the initial costing, arranging for typesetting, selecting and buying paper, ensuring Sales get the book proofs they require at the right time, and finally organizing the printing and binding of the book and its delivery into the warehouse. The job is to produce the books on time, as economically as possible and at the right level of quality for the market. You will be required to do some filing, data entry, archiving and varied admin work amongst a team who are highly organized, able to negotiate, diplomatic yet tenacious and willing to accept responsibility for the quality of the final product.
Work experience within the Trade Publicity Department is very wide-ranging, and can consist of anything from filing and making showcards, to author correspondence and mail-shotting. It can be combined with experience in other departments (depending on availability) and will provide valuable insight into a busy publishing house, and hands-on experience of book promotion in our industry.
The Group Rights department is responsible for the sale of our authors’ rights in the UK market, such as newspaper serialisations and book club and internationally where we sell to foreign language publishers as well as the US. Film adaptation, TV and radio dramatisations also come into our remit. Work experience in the Rights department offers the chance to get an overview of the exciting and colourful business of rights selling with activities ranging from writing pitching letters to foreign language publishers to administering sales information and processing contracts.
