NEWS: Vikram Seth to Return to Orion
W&N Acquires New Novel, A Suitable Girl
Weidenfeld & Nicolson is delighted to announce that it has secured publishing rights to Vikram Seth’s A Suitable Girl, the sequel to his award-winning, critically acclaimed bestseller, A Suitable Boy, which was published in 1993, and has since sold over a million copies around the world in twenty languages. In addition, the company has reacquired the rights to A Suitable Boy which Weidenfeld & Nicolson is proud to be republishing this year, the book’s twentieth anniversary. In addition, the novel will be published in electronic form for the first time.
While A Suitable Boy was set in 1950s India, and followed the lives and fortunes of four families, with its focus on the efforts of Lata Mehra’s mother to find her "a suitable boy" to marry, the sequel will revolve around the stories of Lata’s grandchildren and the events of the present day. Publication is set for autumn 2016.
A Suitable Boy is one of the longest novels ever written in the English language. It was hailed worldwide on publication (“Puts a subcontinent between hardcovers” wrote the Sunday Times), and has continued to attract millions of fans ever since. Its vast and rich panorama remains as bright and alluring today as it was when the book was first published.
The deal was negotiated with agent David Godwin by Malcolm Edwards, Deputy CEO and Publisher, Orion Publishing Group
Kirsty Dunseath, Publishing Director Weidenfeld & Nicolson said: “The whole team here is absolutely thrilled to be publishing Vikram once more. He is such an immensely talented, versatile, and well-loved author. The scope of his creative vision is truly impressive and on a personal level it will be a privilege to work with him as he brings his Suitable Girl to life”
Vikram Seth said: “Twenty years ago, Orion, who were then quite a new publisher, took a risk and brought out A Suitable Boy. It is entirely in the fitness of things that A Suitable Girl will be joining her companion. And for my part, it is a great pleasure to be home again”

He has written acclaimed books in several genres: several books of poetry; a verse novel, The Golden Gate; a travel book, From Heaven Lake; animal fables, Beastly Tales; an epic novel, A Suitable Boy; a memoir, Two Lives and a novel, An Equal Music.
