Rogue Moon

By Algis Budrys

  • E-Book
  • £P.O.R.

A terrifying and compelling novel of obsession and the limits of the human psyche.

Shortlisted for the 1961 Hugo Award, Rogue Moon is the disquieting and story of what happens when monstrous scientific ambition is matched by human obsession.

The moon had finally been reached, and on it was found the most terrifying structure, that killed men over and over again, in torturous, unfathomable ways. Clearly, only a mad man or a suicidal maniac could explore its horrible secrets.

All his life, Al Barker has toyed with death. So when the US lunar programme needs a volunteer to penetrate a murderous labyrinth, alien to all human comprehension, Barker's the man to do it. But what is required of Barker is that he withstand the trauma of dying, not just once, but time and time and time again ...

For Kivrin Engle, preparing an on-site study of one of the deadliest eras in humanity's history was as simple as receiving inoculations against the diseases of the fourteenth century and inventing an alibi for a woman traveling alone. For her instructors in the twenty-first century, it meant painstaking calculations and careful monitoring of the rendezvous location where Kivrin would be received. But a crisis strangely linking past and future strands Kivrin in a bygone age as her fellows try desperately to rescue her. In a time of superstition and fear, Kivrin - barely of age herself - finds she has become an unlikely angel of hope during one of history's darkest hours.Winner of the Hugo Award 1993Winner of the Nebula Award 1993"A tour de force" - New York Times Book Review"Ambitious, finely detailed and compulsivly readable" - Locus"It is a book that feels fundamentally true; it is a book to live in" - Washington Post

Traveling back in time, from Oxford circa 2060 into the thick of World War II, was a routine excursion for three British historians eager to study firsthand the heroism and horrors of the Dunkirk evacuation and the London Blitz. But getting marooned in war-torn 1940 England has turned Michael Davies, Merope Ward, and Polly Churchill from temporal tourists into besieged citizens struggling to survive Hitler's devastating onslaught. And now there's more to worry about than just getting back home: The impossibility of altering past events has always been a core belief of time-travel theory - but it may be tragically wrong. When discrepancies in the historical record begin cropping up, it suggests that one or all of the future visitors have somehow changed the past - and, ultimately, the outcome of the war.Award-winning author Connie Willis returns with a stunning, enormously entertaining novel of time travel, war, and the deeds - great and small - of ordinary people who shape history.

Authors:
Algis Budrys

In his latest science fiction volume Algis Budrys, author of 'The Unexpected Dimension' and 'Who?', continues to cast a scorching eye at life as it is lived today, skilfully extrapolating a present trend into the future, or presenting a current social problem in a new light. The stories are varied in mood and theme, yet they take an ironic view of mankind and its prospects, and the quality of writing is uniformly high.

Blood and Burning

Algis Budrys
Authors:
Algis Budrys

Science fiction begins, wrote Algis J. Budrys, where unreality leaves off. In these unforgettable stories Budrys creates an alien but familiar world stripped of the lies of everyday life: a world where cannibalism is a medical, not an ethical problem; where "not-dying" is the alternative to both life and death; where the last man on Earth dances in hideous and exquisite joy.
