The Book of the New Sun: Volume 2

Sword and Citadel

By Gene Wolfe

  • Paperback
  • £12.99

The concluding two volumes of Gene Wolfe's magnificent, award-winning The Book of the New Sun.

An extraordinary epic, set a million years in the future, in the time of a dying sun, when our present culture is no longer even a memory.

The torturer's apprentice, Severian, exiled from his guild after falling in love with one of his prisoners, is now the Lictor of Thrax, a city far distant from his home. But it is not long before Severian must flee this city, too, and journey again into the world. Embattled by friends and enemies alike, pursued by monstrous creatures, the one-time torturer's apprentice must overcome hitherto unimagined perils, as he moves closer to fulfilling his ultimate destiny.

This edition contains the concluding two volumes of this four-volume novel, The Sword of the Lictor and The Citadel of the Autarch.

From the bestselling author of the epic Malazan Book of the Fallen, comes a story of mankind's first contact and a warning about our future. An alien AI has been sent to the solar system as representative of three advanced species. Its mission is to save the Earth's ecosystem - and the biggest threat to that is humanity. But we are also part of the system, so the AI must make a choice. Should it save mankind or wipe it out? Are we worth it?The AI is all-powerful, and might as well be a god. So it sets up some conditions. Violence is now impossible. Large-scale destruction of natural resources is impossible. Food and water will be provided for those who really, truly need them. You can't even bully someone on the internet any more. The old way of doing things is gone. But a certain thin-skinned US president, among others, is still wedded to late-stage capitalism. Fury

Henry Kuttner
Authors:
Henry Kuttner

This is no story for the lily-livered. FURY is a novel of violence. It describes the tortured struggle of the human race to aspire to the stars from the deeps of the Venusian seas. The struggle is organised around the career of Sam Reed, an Immortal. It is a career which finally, through chicanery, desire for self-aggrandizement and murder - and yet, beyond it all, a distorted vision of the glowing future of man - brings all the human race up from the safe Venusian seas and out into the open terrors of the biologically furious land surface of the planet, there to struggle and achieve once again a noble destiny. FURY shows how under conditions incomprehensibly different from those we now experience, mankind once again starts up the long climb from decay to greatness.
