  • £20.00

A poignant, intimate, funny, inspiring memoir - both a coming-of-age story and a meditation on creativity, devotion, and craft-from Bryan Cranston, beloved and acclaimed star of one of history's most successful TV shows,Breaking Bad.

A poignant, intimate, funny, inspiring memoir - both a coming-of-age story and a meditation on creativity, devotion, and craft - from Bryan Cranston, beloved and acclaimed star of one of history's most successful TV shows, Breaking Bad.

Bryan Cranston landed his first role at seven, when his father cast him in a United Way commercial. Acting was clearly the boy's destiny, until one day his father disappeared. Destiny suddenly took a backseat to survival.

Now, in his riveting memoir, Cranston maps his zigzag journey from abandoned son to beloved star by recalling the many odd parts he's played in real life - paperboy, farmhand, security guard, dating consultant, murder suspect, dock loader, lover, husband, father. Cranston also chronicles his evolution on camera, from soap opera player trying to master the rules of show business to legendary character actor turning in classic performances as Seinfeld dentist Tim Whatley, "a sadist with newer magazines," and Malcolm in the Middle dad Hal Wilkerson, a lovable bumbler in tighty-whities. He also gives an inspiring account of how he prepared, physically and mentally, for the challenging role of President Lyndon Johnson, a tour de force that won him a Tony to go along with his four Emmys.

Of course, Cranston dives deep into the grittiest details of his greatest role, explaining how he searched inward for the personal darkness that would help him create one of the most memorable performances ever captured on screen: Walter White, chemistry teacher turned drug kingpin.

Discussing his life as few men do, describing his art as few actors can, Cranston has much to say about creativity, devotion, and craft, as well as innate talent and its challenges and benefits and proper maintenance. But ultimately A Life in Parts is a story about the joy, the necessity, and the transformative power of simple hard work.

Dear Cancer, Love Victoria

Victoria Derbyshire
Authors:
Victoria Derbyshire

'I can't bear not to be with these three most important people in my life. I can't bear not to be there alongside Mark as my children grow up. My bright, funny, affectionate boys who are never embarrassed to say, "love you mummy", and say it ten times day.' Renowned as a much-loved and highly respected BBC journalist, Victoria Derbyshire has spent 20 years finding the human story behind the headlines. In 2015, she found herself at the heart of the news, with a devastating breast cancer diagnosis. With honesty and openness, she decided to live out her treatment and recovery in the spotlight in a series of video diaries that encouraged thousands to seek diagnosis and help. Victoria has kept a diary since she was nine years old and in DEAR CANCER, LOVE VICTORIA she shares her day to day experiences of life following diagnosis and coming to terms with a future that wasn't planned. From the moment she woke up to find her right breast had collapsed, to telling her partner and children, through to mastectomy and chemotherapy. From wearing a wig to work and hiding it from her colleagues, to the relief and joy of finishing treatment before immediately flying to Glasgow to present a debate on the European Referendum. By sharing her story, she became the person that mums, daughters, sisters, husbands, boyfriends and family members contacted to thank as they tried to find ways to cope with their own and their loved ones' prognosis, and needed to know that they were not alone. Victoria's story is an affecting and at times heart-breaking one but it is so often laugh-out-loud too. Moving, wonderfully heartwarming and ultimately uplifting, this is a powerful account of a brave struggle told with honesty, courage and emotion that gives strength to anyone touched by cancer.(p) 2017 Orion Publishing Group

Splendours and Miseries: The Roy Strong Diaries, 1967-87

Roy Strong
Authors:
Roy Strong

For over three decades Roy Strong has teased, tantalised, amused and sometimes enraged the British public, firstly in his capacity as the flamboyant director of two great cultural institutions, the National Portrait Gallery and the Victoria & Albert Museum, and more recently as a broadcaster, writer, garden expert and historian. This first volume of diaries takes the reader into the heart of his career from 1967 to 1987, vividly recording events as they happened, and revealing Sir Roy to be not just a mercurial and brilliant administrator but also a shrewd observer of the glittering social and political milieu into which he was drawn. In these pages we meet David Hockney in his studio, the poignant figure of Cecil Beaton in decline, the Philistine Mrs Thatcher, the ever-indestructible Diana Cooper, and many others, including a bevy of members of the Royal Family. SPLENDOURS AND MISERIES provides a unique panorama of the world of the arts, fashion and society, taking us from the outrageous Swinging Sixties to the hard-edged glitz of Thatcher's Britain.

Hello beauts, I am so beyond excited to finally share with you my big secret. I HAVE A BOOK COMING OUT!This book is about my journey from start to finish, right up to what I'm looking for in the future. What an adventure it has been to write! I have laughed, cried, cringed and beamed with pride recounting all the crazy stories I have put into it. The 'Love' chapter needed to be completely rewritten half way through which was tough ... but it worked a bit like therapy and has taught me so much about myself.I pinch myself all the time over how fortunate I have been. Not only was I born into the most magical family and given the most unique childhood - being part of a foster family full of love - but six years ago I landed a place on a little BAFTA award-winning show called TOWIE (I know, SIX years - crazy right?). Through it I have grown from a quiet, vulnerable teenager, who was honestly a bit lost in life, into an entrepreneur, fundraiser and worldwide adventurer all before my 22nd birthday.Alongside my story, I've shared everything I now know that I wish I had back then. From dating rules, to make-up routines and the amazing work-out that got me bikini-ready for my TOWIE return in 2014. I've even packed it full of my favourite inspirational quotes, recipes, and photos (the good, the bad and the ugly!). So fingers and toes crossed that you like it ;)Live, Laugh, Love,Always Lydia

Memoirs and Reflections

Evgeny Kissin
Authors:
Evgeny Kissin

Evgeny Igorevitch Kissin is a Russian-British-Israeli classical pianist. He first came to international fame as a child prodigy. He has been a British citizen since 2002 and an Israeli citizen since 2013. He has a wide repertoire and is especially known for his interpretations of the works of the Romantic era, particularly those of Frédéric Chopin, Sergei Rachmaninoff and Franz Liszt. The first two parts describe Kissin's childhood in Russia and his family's decision to live abroad after the attempted putsch at the Moscow White House. The third part consists mostly of his views of other pianists and conductors, as well as memories of people he met during his early years and career.Kissin writes about his parents, his sister, his grandparents and his teachers with tender affection and touching detail that gives his memoirs the transparency of water. Here are the things and the people and events that formed him, nurtured and challenged him, and the individuals who made him feel gratitude, amazement and awe. And, of course, it is infused with his lifelong engagement with making music, an obsessive love that captured him when he was young. The book throws a good deal of light on the life and attitudes of the mainly Russian Jewish intelligentsia, the problems of visas to America, Britain and other countries, and his views on performance of music, his own compositions in music and verse, and his personal approach to concerts. It also offers Kissin's philosophy of life and his understanding of human nature derived from meetings with learned people, books and his own day-to-day experience. He does not indulge in false modesty, but takes a realistic view of who he is in the eyes of the world.

A Portrait of an Idiot as a Young Man

Jon Holmes
Authors:
Jon Holmes

When Jon Holmes became a father (twice), he was asked to fill in a form detailing his family medical history. Except he couldn't, because he has no idea who his family are. Born to an unnamed, unmarried mother and an unknown father and given up for adoption at four weeks old, Jon decided to document his own history, so that one day he could pass it on to his children. It's a story of how boys grow up to become (stupid) men, of sexual misadventure, of being accidentally shot in the face, of spiders, a ghost, a fatally injured gerbil, American road trips that went wrong, becoming inadvertently locked in Graham Norton's toilet with an Oscar nominated screenwriter, being removed from Mrs Thatcher's vicinity by her security detail and having loving parents who did their best to bring up a child that wasn't theirs. Part memoir, part hilarious insight into why men are so inept, this is the true story of how an unwanted baby in the Midlands went on to become a wanted man in the state of Texas, and everything that happened in between. His children will never be allowed to read it.
