Dear Cancer

A diary of hope to help you through

By Victoria Derbyshire

  • Paperback
  • £9.99

Moving and wonderfully warm-hearted, this is Victoria Derbyshire's honest and authentic account of how she dealt with a devastating breast cancer diagnosis.

Fully updated to include a new introduction by Lynda Thomas, CEO of Macmillan Cancer Support.

'I can't bear not to be with these three most important people in my life. I can't bear not to be there alongside Mark as my children grow up. My bright, funny, affectionate boys who are never embarrassed to say, "love you mummy", and say it ten times day.'

Renowned as a much-loved and highly respected BBC journalist, Victoria Derbyshire has spent 20 years finding the human story behind the headlines. In 2015 she found herself at the heart of the news, with a devastating breast cancer diagnosis. With honesty and openness, she decided to live out her treatment and recovery in the spotlight in a series of video diaries that encouraged thousands to seek diagnosis and help.

Victoria has kept a diary since she was nine years old and in DEAR CANCER, LOVE VICTORIA she shares her day to day experiences of life following her diagnosis and coming to terms with a future that wasn't planned. From the moment she woke up to find her right breast had collapsed, to telling her partner and children, through to mastectomy and chemotherapy. From wearing a wig to work and hiding it from her colleagues, to the relief and joy of finishing treatment before immediately flying to Glasgow to present a debate on the European Referendum.

By sharing her story, she became the person that mums, daughters, sisters, husbands, boyfriends and family members contacted to thank as they tried to find ways to cope with their own and their loved ones' prognosis, and needed to know that they were not alone.

Victoria's story is an affecting and at times heart-breaking one but it is so often laugh-out-loud too. Moving, wonderfully heartwarming and ultimately uplifting, this is a powerful account of a brave struggle told with honesty, courage and emotion that gives strength to anyone touched by cancer.

Demystifying The Female Brain

Sarah McKay
Authors:
Sarah McKay

Understanding how your brain works during the key stages of life is essential to maintaining your health. Dr Sarah McKay is a neuroscientist who knows everything worth knowing about women's brains, and shares it in this cutting-edge, essential book. This is not a book about the differences between male and female brains, nor a book using neuroscience to explain gender-specific behaviours, the 'battle of the sexes' or 'Mars-Venus' stereotypes. This is a book about what happens to the brains of women as they cycle through the phases of life, which are unique to females by virtue of their biology and in particular their hormones. In Demystifying The Female Brain, Dr McKay gives insights into brain development during infancy, childhood and the teenage years (including the onset of puberty) and looks at pregnancy, motherhood, and mental health. The book weaves together findings from the research lab, interviews with neuroscientists and other researchers working in the disciplines of neuroendocrinology, brain development, brain health and ageing, along with stories and case studies.

From Here to Eternity

Caitlin Doughty, Landis Blair
Contributors:
Caitlin Doughty, Landis Blair

As a practising mortician, Caitlin Doughty has long been fascinated by our pervasive terror of dead bodies. In From Here to Eternity she sets out in search of cultures unburdened by such fears. In rural Indonesia, she observes a man clean and dress his grandfather's mummified body. She meets Bolivian ñatitas (cigarette-smoking, wish-granting human skulls), and discovers the Japanese ritual of kotsuage, in which relatives use chopsticks to pluck their loved-ones' bones from cremation ashes. With curiosity and morbid humour, Doughty introduces us to inspiring death-care innovators, participates in powerful death practices almost entirely unknown in the West and explores new spaces for mourning - including a futuristic glowing-Buddha columbarium in Japan, a candlelit Mexican cemetery, and America's only open-air pyre. In doing so she expands our sense of what it means to treat the dead with 'dignity' and reveals unexpected possibilities for our own death rituals.

Always Hungry?

David S. Ludwig
Authors:
David S. Ludwig

ALWAYS HUNGRY? will be both a relief and a revelation to many who struggle with weight. We're not getting fat because we're overeating; we're overeating because we're getting fat. In other words, what makes us constantly hungry, overweight, and undernourished is not a lack of will power, but a biological reaction to our present-day diet and lifestyle. Our fat cells are hoarding the nutrients from the food we eat instead of releasing them into the bloodstream to be used, triggering a starvation response that sets us up for failure: if we eat more, we'll gain weight; if we eat less, we'll slow our metabolism down and (again) gain weight. HELP!ALWAYS HUNGRY shows us how to break out of this cycle that is keeping us overweight. It helps us to: - re-programme our fat cells - tame humger- boost our metabolism- lose weight In a clear, compassionate, and authoritative voice, Dr Ludwig debunks the calorie myth that losing weight is simply a matter of eating less. He explains the science and the research behind our epidemic of overweightness and presents a detailed, highly structured plan to help us conquer the cravings.
