30 Years of Matt

The best of the best - brilliant cartoons from the genius, award-winning Matt.

By Matt Pritchett

  • Hardback
  • £14.99

The nation's favourite cartoonist looks back at the last 30 years - the perfect Christmas gift.

From all-day opening hours to President Trump; from the first Red Nose Day to Brexit...

The last 30 years has seen some momentous - and not so momentous - events. 6 Prime Ministers, 7 General Elections, from Thatcher to New Labour, Cameron's Coalition to May's Minority. 1 Brexit, 1 hung Parliament, 1 Queen, 3 Popes and the first black US President. And chronicling the entire three decades is Matt, beloved, award-winning cartoonist - and the very best there is.

Whether it's beleaguered commuters, political surprises, national absurdities, Royal babies or the weather, Matt always encapsulates the moment with the perfect cartoon.

'Matt is the Don Bradman of daily cartoonists - so much greater than his nearest rivals it's almost embarrassing' Stephen Fry

Biographical Notes

Matt studied at St Martin's School of Art in London and first saw himself published in the New Statesman during one of its rare lapses from high seriousness. He has been the Daily Telegraph's pocket cartoonist since 1988. He was 'WHAT THE PAPERS SAY' CARTOONIST OF THE YEAR three times and is also five times winner of the UK PRESS GAZETTE CARTOONIST OF THE YEAR. He has won the CARTOON ARTS TRUST POCKET CARTOONIST OF THE YEAR AWARD six times, most recently in 2013, and in 2002 he received an MBE.

Elis and John Present the Holy Vible

Elis James, John Robins
Authors:
Elis James, John Robins

'Elis and John are my go-to place when I need a bloody good laugh. Properly funny!' Sarah MillicanComedians Elis James and John Robins have captured the hearts and minds of a generation, and it's time those hearts and minds had a book.Elis and John met in 2005 performing stand-up comedy in a pub called The Yellow Kangaroo in Cardiff. They eyed each other suspiciously before Robins offered the limpest handshake in the history of the world.'It was a power play,' says Robins. 'I may even have raised it for him to kiss.' James expands: 'It was one of the weirdest things I'd ever experienced, but having known John now for over a decade, it was the tip of the iceberg. I can honestly say he's the oddest man I've ever met.'Little did they know that ten years later they would be presenting a radio show together that would make them comedy royalty...Ok, radio comedy royalty...Ok, commercial digital indie radio royalty...But with a podcast! Now, The Elis James and John Robins' Show has become cult listening, and that cult has registered for charitable status, published quarterly accounts and been given a full blessing by the Archbishop of Broadcasting. It's official: Elis and John are a religion, and this book is their Holy Vible.Have you ever failed to Keep It Session? Is your new flatmate a complete coin? Have you ever eaten Space Raiders on the toilet and written 'Grief Is Living' in your journal? Then this book is for you. If not, don't worry, it won't be long before you're making up games, looking at Freddie, or facing your own personal farthing-gate.Our obsessions make us what we are, and though you may never have addressed a will to Brian May or cried watching Ronnie O' Sullivan make a 147, you'll have done something similar, and Elis and John are here to tell you that you're not weird, so come on in, and taste the vibe! Or should I say, READ the vibe!

A Sunday Times top-five bestseller'This is a remarkable book . . . profound and deeply moving . . . It has as much to tell us about mental illness as it does about policing' Alastair StewartJohn Sutherland joined the Met in 1992, having dreamed of being a police officer since his teens. Rising quickly through the ranks, he experienced all that is extraordinary about a life in blue: saving lives, finding the lost, comforting the broken and helping to take dangerous people off the streets. But for every case with a happy ending, there were others that ended in desperate sadness, and in 2013 John suffered a major breakdown.Blue is his memoir of crime and calamity, of adventure and achievement, of friendship and failure, of serious illness and slow recovery. With searing honesty, it offers an immensely moving and personal insight into what it is to be a police officer in Britain today.

Stiff Upper Lip

Alex Renton

'A brave and necessary book' GUARDIAN'Shocking, gripping and sobering' SUNDAY TELEGRAPHThis is the story of generations of parents, Britain's richest and grandest, who believed that being miserable at school was necessary to make a good and successful citizen. Childish suffering was a price they accepted for the preservation of their class, and their entitlement. The children who were moulded by this misery and abuse went on - as they still do - to run Britain's public institutions and private companies.Confronting the truth of his own schooldays and the crimes he witnessed, Alex Renton has revealed a much bigger story. It is of a profound malaise in the British elite, shown up by tolerance of the abuse of its own children that amounts to collusion. This culture and its traditions, and the hypocrisy, cronyism and conspiracy that underpin them, are key to any explanation of the scandals over sexual abuse, violence and cover-up in child care institutions that are now shocking the nation. As Renton shows, complicity in this is the bleak secret at the heart of today's British elite.

Signals

Pippa Malmgren
Authors:
Pippa Malmgren

She predicted the financial crisis. She predicted Brexit. She predicted Trump. Now Dr Pippa Malmgren shares the signals that will protect you from the next surprise.Drawing on a wonderful range of examples - from magazine covers and supermarkets to public protests - SIGNALS is the fascinating story of the world economy told in the language of everyday objects, places and events. Malmgren explains why the size of chocolate bars, steaks and apartments are shrinking, and why the increasing near misses between America's spy planes and the fighter jets of China and Russia are no coincidence. Rising costs and inflation are breaking the social contract between citizens and their states, causing the rise of anti-establishment voting, the return of social unrest to emerging markets and resistance to mass immigration. If the only solution is innovation, then the key question is whether governments support efforts to invest in the economy of tomorrow. Written with refreshing clarity, SIGNALS shows us who is already building the future and how to be part of it.'Rather wonderful' FINANCIAL TIMES'It will make you feel smart' EVENING STANDARD
