Elis and John Present the Holy Vible

The Book The Bible Could Have Been

By Elis James and John Robins

  • Hardback
  • £18.99

The Holy Vible is a complete guide to the hilariously niche and wonderfully obscure world of commercial digital indie radio's most-unproducible hammer legends: Elis James and John Robins. The most exciting double act in comedy take on the big topics: Shame, Queen, The Highway Code (and others).

'Elis and John are my go-to place when I need a bloody good laugh. Properly funny!' Sarah Millican

Comedians Elis James and John Robins have captured the hearts and minds of a generation, and it's time those hearts and minds had a book.

Elis and John met in 2005 performing stand-up comedy in a pub called The Yellow Kangaroo in Cardiff. They eyed each other suspiciously before Robins offered the limpest handshake in the history of the world.

'It was a power play,' says Robins. 'I may even have raised it for him to kiss.'

James expands: 'It was one of the weirdest things I'd ever experienced, but having known John now for over a decade, it was the tip of the iceberg. I can honestly say he's the oddest man I've ever met.'

Little did they know that ten years later they would be presenting a radio show together that would make them comedy royalty...

Ok, radio comedy royalty...Ok, commercial digital indie radio royalty...But with a podcast!

Now, The Elis James and John Robins' Show has become cult listening, and that cult has registered for charitable status, published quarterly accounts and been given a full blessing by the Archbishop of Broadcasting. It's official: Elis and John are a religion, and this book is their Holy Vible.

Have you ever failed to Keep It Session? Is your new flatmate a complete coin? Have you ever eaten Space Raiders on the toilet and written 'Grief Is Living' in your journal? Then this book is for you. If not, don't worry, it won't be long before you're making up games, looking at Freddie, or facing your own personal farthing-gate.

Our obsessions make us what we are, and though you may never have addressed a will to Brian May or cried watching Ronnie O' Sullivan make a 147, you'll have done something similar, and Elis and John are here to tell you that you're not weird, so come on in, and taste the vibe! Or should I say, READ the vibe!

Biographical Notes

Elis James and John Robins are both successful comedians in their own right, and The Elis James and John Robins Show on Radio X has been the beating heart of this operation. Over the course of more than two hundred shows, the warm dynamic of their genuine friendship has enabled them to find humour in even the darkest of moments.

John Robins has a phenomenal grasp of admin, which means when things like writing biographies like this need to be done, he finishes them before Elis has even read the email. In 2017 he won the prestigious Edinburgh Comedy Award (formerly The Perrier). He has also won two Chortle awards, one for Best Compere, and one for Best Radio. The latter was for The Elis James and John Robins show on Radio X, which he was persuaded to share with Elis 70/30, perhaps even 65/35. He has appeared on Live at The Apollo, Mock The Week, Stand-Up Central, The Last Leg, Live From The BBC, Russell Howard's Good News and Alan Davies: As Yet Untitled. Due to circumstances beyond his control John lives alone and is fine with that.

Elis James is also a comedian, though he now mainly performs in Welsh so the quality of the material is anyone's guess. He has acted in projects such as BBC sitcom Josh and BBC Wales travelogue James and Jupp, projects which John would be perfect for but has consistently turned down offers to appear in. Elis also won a Bronze Sony Award for a previous Radio Show, the name of which remains a mystery due to not having a Wikipedia page. That said, Elis is no stranger to success, having witnessed it first hand through his fiancé Isy Suttie, an actor, writer and comedian who has been nominated for three British Comedy Awards and played Dobby in hit sitcom Peepshow. She currently stars in Channel 4 sitcoms Man Down and Damned, and in 2016 published her debut book The Actual One. Isy and Elis have a daughter and live together in South London, in a house that Isy bought.

'In modern living's quest for authenticity, Elis and John are the real deal. Theirs is a reconstructed version of masculinity that includes self-awareness, fallibility, bravery, kindness, intelligence, compassion, and, not least, humour.' The Independent

How Does It Feel?

Mark Kermode
Authors:
Mark Kermode

Following a formative encounter with the British pop movie Slade in Flame in 1975, Mark Kermode decided that musical superstardom was totally attainable. And so, armed with a homemade electric guitar and very little talent, he embarked on an alternative career - a chaotic journey which would take him from the halls and youth clubs of North London to the stages of Glastonbury, the London Palladium and The Royal Albert Hall.HOW DOES IT FEEL? follows a lifetime of musical misadventures which have seen Mark striking rockstar poses in the Sixth Form Common Room, striding around a string of TV shows dressed from head to foot in black leather, getting heckled off stage by a bunch of angry septuagenarians on a boat on the Mersey, showing Timmy Mallet how to build a tea-chest bass - and winning the International Street Entertainers of the Year award as part of a new wave of skiffle. Really. Hilarious, self-deprecating and blissfully nostalgic, this is a riotous account of a bedroom dreamer's attempts to conquer the world armed with nothing more than a chancer's enthusiasm and a simple philosophy: how hard can it be?

Making a Noise

John Tusa
Authors:
John Tusa

In almost sixty years of professional life, John Tusa has fought for and sometimes against the major arts and political institutions in the country. A distinguished journalist, broadcaster and leader of arts organisations, he has stood up publicly for the independence of the BBC, the need for public funding of the arts and for the integrity of universities. He has made enemies in the process. From the battles to create the ground-breaking Newsnight in 1979, to six years of defending the BBC World Service from political interference, Tusa's account is etched with candour. His account of two years of internecine warfare at the top of the BBC under the Chairman, 'Dukey' Hussey will go down as a major contribution to BBC history. His recollections of a hilarious and petty-minded few months as head of a Cambridge college will be read as a case study of the absurdities of academic life; while running the rejected and maligned Barbican Centre, Tusa led its recovery into the major cultural centre that it is today.Often based on personal diaries, Making a Noise is a fearless and entertaining memoir of life at the top of the arts and broadcasting.

Arron Crascall

Alright guys? It's me, Arron. Or as some people call me, 'that guy with the phone, the skinny jeans and the really fat head'.In a world that seems to be freefalling without a parachute towards utter chaos, I'm here to remind you that when life gives you lemons, make lemonade. No, in fact, when life gives you lemons, make a fool out of yourself in the lemonade aisle.*Because there's more to life than Brexit, Bake Off and banging on about being vegan. Yes, with this book - which is my take on the world - you will learn how to survive a proper lads' holiday, become a master in the art of takeaway ordering and find out about the pitfalls of seriously inappropriate tattoos. So do yourself a favour: turn off the news, cancel that juice cleanse, open your eyes to the brilliant, hilarious world we live in and most importantly . . . buy this book.SEE YA LATER! Arron x*Actually, don't do exactly that, that's my thing.

Scenes and Apparitions

Roy Strong
Authors:
Roy Strong

Scenes and Apparitions begins where its predecessor, Splendours and Miseries, left off. It covers a period of Roy Strong's life from 1988 to 2003. Shaking off the shackles of public life, Roy was free for the first time to reinvent himself, leaving behind the political and cultural machinations of the art world. Left with little to live on, he turned his hand to what came his way, first as a consultant to the Canary Wharf development; then as a television and radio presenter; and finally as a full-time writer of books on the nation's history and civilisation, as well as on garden design and history. The urge to keep a diary ebbed and flowed and continues to be nothing other than sporadic - when this or that prods his pen to describe a scene or a person. This volume of his diaries is an unmissable record of how a citizen at the close of the second Elizabethan age observed and chronicles his own world, as the last decade of the twentieth century gave way to the first decade of the twenty-first.
