Elis and John Present the Holy Vible

The Book The Bible Could Have Been

By Elis James and John Robins

  • Hardback
  • £18.99

The Holy Vible is a complete guide to the hilariously niche and wonderfully obscure world of commercial digital indie radio's most-unproducible hammer legends: Elis James and John Robins. The most exciting double act in comedy take on the big topics: Shame, Queen, The Highway Code (and others).

'Elis and John are my go-to place when I need a bloody good laugh. Properly funny!' Sarah Millican

Comedians Elis James and John Robins have captured the hearts and minds of a generation, and it's time those hearts and minds had a book.

Elis and John met in 2005 performing stand-up comedy in a pub called The Yellow Kangaroo in Cardiff. They eyed each other suspiciously before Robins offered the limpest handshake in the history of the world.

'It was a power play,' says Robins. 'I may even have raised it for him to kiss.'

James expands: 'It was one of the weirdest things I'd ever experienced, but having known John now for over a decade, it was the tip of the iceberg. I can honestly say he's the oddest man I've ever met.'

Little did they know that ten years later they would be presenting a radio show together that would make them comedy royalty...

Ok, radio comedy royalty...Ok, commercial digital indie radio royalty...But with a podcast!

Now, The Elis James and John Robins' Show has become cult listening, and that cult has registered for charitable status, published quarterly accounts and been given a full blessing by the Archbishop of Broadcasting. It's official: Elis and John are a religion, and this book is their Holy Vible.

Have you ever failed to Keep It Session? Is your new flatmate a complete coin? Have you ever eaten Space Raiders on the toilet and written 'Grief Is Living' in your journal? Then this book is for you. If not, don't worry, it won't be long before you're making up games, looking at Freddie, or facing your own personal farthing-gate.

Our obsessions make us what we are, and though you may never have addressed a will to Brian May or cried watching Ronnie O' Sullivan make a 147, you'll have done something similar, and Elis and John are here to tell you that you're not weird, so come on in, and taste the vibe! Or should I say, READ the vibe!

Biographical Notes

Elis James and John Robins are both successful comedians in their own right, and The Elis James and John Robins Show on Radio X has been the beating heart of this operation. Over the course of more than two hundred shows, the warm dynamic of their genuine friendship has enabled them to find humour in even the darkest of moments.

John Robins has a phenomenal grasp of admin, which means when things like writing biographies like this need to be done, he finishes them before Elis has even read the email. In 2017 he won the prestigious Edinburgh Comedy Award (formerly The Perrier). He has also won two Chortle awards, one for Best Compere, and one for Best Radio. The latter was for The Elis James and John Robins show on Radio X, which he was persuaded to share with Elis 70/30, perhaps even 65/35. He has appeared on Live at The Apollo, Mock The Week, Stand-Up Central, The Last Leg, Live From The BBC, Russell Howard's Good News and Alan Davies: As Yet Untitled. John lives alone, with silence and his thoughts for company, and is fine with that.

Elis James is also a comedian, though he now mainly performs in Welsh so the quality of the material is anyone's guess. He has acted in projects such as BBC sitcom Josh and BBC Wales travelogue James and Jupp, projects which John would be perfect for but has consistently turned down offers to appear in. Elis also won a Bronze Sony Award for a previous Radio Show, the name of which remains a mystery due to not having a Wikipedia page. That said, Elis is no stranger to success, having witnessed it first hand through his fiancé Isy Suttie, an actor, writer and comedian who has been nominated for three British Comedy Awards and played Dobby in hit sitcom Peep Show. She currently stars in Channel 4 sitcoms Man Down and Damned, and in 2016 published her debut book The Actual One. Isy and Elis have a daughter and live together in South London, in a house that Isy bought.

'In modern living's quest for authenticity, Elis and John are the real deal. Theirs is a reconstructed version of masculinity that includes self-awareness, fallibility, bravery, kindness, intelligence, compassion, and, not least, humour.' The Independent

Your Call

Jeremy Vine
Authors:
Jeremy Vine

'Full of glorious examples of caller wisdom [with] laugh-out-loud anecdotes' Allison Pearson, Sunday TelegraphJeremy Vine has been presenting his BBC Radio 2 show since 2003 - it now attracts more than seven million listeners. He calculates he has taken more than 25,000 calls from his listeners on issues big and small: life, love, lollipop ladies and poisonous plants. But what have the callers told him? If you listen to Radio 4, Brexit was a shock. If you are on Radio 2 it would not have surprised you at all. Where Jeremy's callers once expressed a kind of resignation ('But what can you do?') or a gloomy rejoinder ('You have to laugh'), now they give him their views expecting to be heeded.Listener wisdom is far more valuable than most of what we hear from appointed spokespeople. What was the response when Jeremy asked: 'Have you ever been pecked in the eye by a gannet?' Which subjects are most likely to start pitched warfare between different sections of the audience? (Answer: old people using buses, old people NOT using buses, cellophane, or Tony Blair saying anything.)In a book punctuated by his own vivid stories and laugh-out-loud moments, Jeremy Vine explains what it's like to hit a button and hear - totally unvarnished and unspun - the voice of the so-called 'ordinary' person. And why we should take notice.

Making a Noise

John Tusa
Authors:
John Tusa

In almost sixty years of professional life, John Tusa has fought for and sometimes against the major arts and political institutions in the country. A distinguished journalist, broadcaster and leader of arts organisations, he has stood up publicly for the independence of the BBC, the need for public funding of the arts and for the integrity of universities. He has made enemies in the process. From the battles to create the ground-breaking Newsnight in 1979, to six years of defending the BBC World Service from political interference, Tusa's account is etched with candour. His account of two years of internecine warfare at the top of the BBC under the Chairman, 'Dukey' Hussey will go down as a major contribution to BBC history. His recollections of a hilarious and petty-minded few months as head of a Cambridge college will be read as a case study of the absurdities of academic life; while running the rejected and maligned Barbican Centre, Tusa led its recovery into the major cultural centre that it is today.Often based on personal diaries, Making a Noise is a fearless and entertaining memoir of life at the top of the arts and broadcasting.

Jayne Hardy

Jayne Hardy

Everything you need to know about self-care; what it is, why it's important, why it's such a struggle and how to integrate it into day-to-day life. There's a damaging misconception in society that putting ourselves first is an act of selfishness. But self-care is not just a millennial buzzword. Without the restorative power of self-care, how will we ever escape the vicious circle where we're sick and fed-up of feeling sick and fed-up? Self-care is a tool, accessible to us all, which helps us to take responsibility for our own happiness - our physical, emotional, psychological and social needs. Jayne Hardy, founder and CEO of The Blurt Foundation, argues that it is the best preventative measure available to us to combat overwhelmedness, stress and ill health, in our hectic, modern world. The Self-Care Project is for those who have been feeling off-kilter for a while but have not been able to put the finger on the 'why'. It is a no-nonsense, practical journey to help you do just that. It'll walk you through the case for self-care (why it's so darn important), why it isn't selfish at all, help you explore what self-care means for you, what your obstacles might be and provide advice on how to chisel out daily space for self-care in a practical, achievable and realistic way.'Reading this is like a therapy session with a trusted, empathetic friend determined to help you turn things around, minus any irritating self-righteousness' The Independent

Some Fantastic Place

Chris Difford
Authors:
Chris Difford

Chris Difford is a rare breed. As a member of one of London's best-loved bands, the Squeeze co-founder has made a lasting contribution to English music with hits such as 'Cool For Cats', 'Up The Junction', 'Labelled With Love', 'Hourglass' and 'Tempted'. Even before his first release in 1977, his love of writing lyrics has never wavered. Over the course of a thirteen-album career with Squeeze, it was clear from the very beginning that Difford has few peers when it comes to smart, pithy lyricism. His 'kitchen-sink drama' style has drawn plaudits from fans on both sides of the Atlantic, and his influence is keenly felt today. The likes of Lily Allen. Mark Ronson, Kasabian, Razorlight and many more have recognized the debt they owe to Squeeze's music and to Difford's way with words, while journalists were moved by his winning combination with Glenn Tilbrook to dub the pair 'The New Lennon and McCartney'.In Some Fantastic Place, Chris Difford charts his life from his early days as a dreaming boy in south London with a talent for poetry to becoming a member of one of Britain's greatest bands and beyond. Along the way he reveals the inspiration and stories behind Squeeze's best-known songs, and his greatest highs and lows from over four decades of making music.

Memoirs and Reflections

Evgeny Kissin
Authors:
Evgeny Kissin

Evgeny Igorevitch Kissin is a Russian-British-Israeli classical pianist. He first came to international fame as a child prodigy. He has been a British citizen since 2002 and an Israeli citizen since 2013. He has a wide repertoire and is especially known for his interpretations of the works of the Romantic era, particularly those of Frédéric Chopin, Sergei Rachmaninoff and Franz Liszt. The first two parts describe Kissin's childhood in Russia and his family's decision to live abroad after the attempted putsch at the Moscow White House. The third part consists mostly of his views of other pianists and conductors, as well as memories of people he met during his early years and career.Kissin writes about his parents, his sister, his grandparents and his teachers with tender affection and touching detail that gives his memoirs the transparency of water. Here are the things and the people and events that formed him, nurtured and challenged him, and the individuals who made him feel gratitude, amazement and awe. And, of course, it is infused with his lifelong engagement with making music, an obsessive love that captured him when he was young. The book throws a good deal of light on the life and attitudes of the mainly Russian Jewish intelligentsia, the problems of visas to America, Britain and other countries, and his views on performance of music, his own compositions in music and verse, and his personal approach to concerts. It also offers Kissin's philosophy of life and his understanding of human nature derived from meetings with learned people, books and his own day-to-day experience. He does not indulge in false modesty, but takes a realistic view of who he is in the eyes of the world.
