Garbage World

By Charles Platt

  • E-Book
  • £P.O.R.

An SF Gateway eBook: bringing the classics to the future.

Life on the small asteroid Kopra, the dumping ground whose sole function was to receive specially packaged waste material from surrounding pleasure worlds, was harsh and dirty. Carefully avoided by off-worlders for centuries, Kopra and its rough and ready, filth encrusted inhabitants suddenly became the object of extraordinary interest to officials of the United Asteroid Belt Pleasure World Federation. What happens when the two opposing cultures meet; the super-sanitary citizens of the Pleasure World and the filthy, underfed villages makes an adventure as exciting as it is bizarre.

My Mad Dad

Robyn Hollingworth
Authors:
Robyn Hollingworth

'At some point the cared for become the carers; the only way to avoid this is to live alone in the wilderness. So we end up having to care for the people who had cared for us, and this isn't a shame and it isn't a tragedy and it isn't a chore. It is an honour. To be able to return the gift of love that someone bestows upon you is a gift in itself. This is a story of caring...'At the age of twenty-five Robyn Hollingworth finds herself leaving London to return home to rural South Wales. It's her old life - same teddy bears resting on her pillow, their bodies tucked under the duvet; same view of the garages behind which she'd had her first cigarette and first kiss - but so much has changed. Her father, the proud, charmingly intelligent, self-made man who made people laugh, was in the grip of early onset Alzheimer's. His brilliant mind, which saw him building power stations and literally bringing light into the lives of others, had succumbed to darkness. As Robyn settles back in the rhythms of life in the rain-soaked vast Welsh valleys, she keeps a diary charting her journey from cared-for to carer. Lyrical, poignant and with flashes of brilliant humour, My Mad Dad explores how in helping others we can heal ourselves.

Welcome to Hell?

John McManus
Authors:
John McManus

Whenever people in Britain talk about Turkish football, they don't tend to talk about camaraderie, hospitality and humour. They mention banners proclaiming 'Welcome to hell'. Or Leeds United fans stabbed to death on an Istanbul street. If they do consider the football, then it's not for long. The Turkish league is viewed as an elephant's graveyard for players and managers past their prime: Dirk Kuyt, Graham Souness, Didier Drogba, Robin van Persie. But Graham Souness has faded from memory for most Turkish football fans, and Turkish teams regularly compete at the latter stages of European competition. There is clearly a gap between perception and reality. So what is Turkish football really about? Through visits to far-flung clubs, encounters with characterful players and experiences at riotous matches, John McManus makes the case for defining football in Turkey by more than thuggery and washed-up superstars. From the elite training facilities of Istanbul to dusty pitches on the Anatolian plain, Welcome to Hell? offers a unique take on this rich, funny and alluring football culture, at once both familiar and miles apart from the game in Britain.
