The Upside

By Abdel Sellou

  • E-Book
  • £P.O.R.

Now a major motion picture starring Bryan Cranston and Nicole Kidman, the uplifting tale of an unlikely friendship between a wisecracking, unemployed immigrant, and a man born to wealth, recently paralysed in a paragliding accident.

The story of how Abdel Sellou (a charismatic ex-con) came to be the caretaker of Philippe Pozzo di Borgo (a paralyzed French aristocrat) inspired the award-winning French movie Les Intouchables (2012), which became an international phenomenon and broke records as one of the most successful French movies of all time. Now, The Upside, the American remake of Les Intouchables, starring Kevin Hart, Bryan Cranston, and Nicole Kidman will be released in both the US and the UK in January 2019.

Abdel Sellou and Philippe Pozzo di Borgo were two people marginalized by society: Sellou a wisecracking, unemployed immigrant, just out on parole; Pozzo a man born to wealth and privilege, recently paralyzed from the neck down after a paragliding accident. How they came to help each other, and the unlikely friendship that became a lifeline for them both, is an uplifting story that's now been told and retold around the world.

Biographical Notes

Abdel Sellou now lives in Algeria with his wife and three children, where he runs a chicken farm. He remains close to Philippe Pozzo di Borgo, who lives in Morocco with his second wife and two children.

What is the experience of black men in Britain? With continued conversation around British identity, racism and diversity, there is no better time to explore this question and give black British men a platform to answer it. SAFE: On Black British Men Reclaiming Space is that platform. Including essays from top poets, writers, musicians, actors and journalists, this timely and accessible book brings together a selection of powerful reflections exploring the black British male experience and what it really means to reclaim and hold space in the landscape of our society.Where do black men belong in school, in the media, in their own families, in the conversation about mental health, in the LGBT community, in grime music - and how can these voices inspire, educate and add to the dialogue of diversity already taking place? Following on from discussions raised by The Good Immigrant and Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race, this collection takes readers on a rich and varied path to confront and question the position of black men in Britain today, and shines a light on the way forward.Contributors include poet Suli Breaks, award-winning author Alex Wheatle, Channel 4 news reporter Symeon Brown, Guardian journalist Joseph Harker and many more. This audio book includes readings from Derek Owusu, Yomi Sode, Alex Holmes, Alex Wheatle, Courttia Newland, Jesse Bernard, JJ Bola, Joseph Harker, Aniefiok 'Neef' Ekpoudom, Robyn Travis, Okechukwu Nzelu, Stephen Morrison-Burke, Symeon Brown, Nels Abbey, Jude Yawson, Derek Oppong, Kenechukwu Obienu, Gbontwi Anyetei, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith(p) Orion Publishing Group Ltd 2019
