When Chewy the dog arrives at the sanctuary of Barby Keel, the scrawny little Yorkshire Terrier is terrified. Having been abandoned by his beloved owner after years of being homeless, Chewy's whole world has been turned upside down. The scruffy little dog has grown up on the streets, sleeping on the beach in Hastings. Chewy knows what it is to be cold and hungry, to have nowhere safe to stay, no warm bed to sleep on, no regular food or time to play.Trembling and fearful, Chewy refuses to let Barby out of his sight, his little legs chasing after her and howling whenever he's left alone, traumatised at the thought of being deserted once more. Despite her resolve to not get too attached to the animals that come into her care, Barby cannot help but let the vulnerable little terrier into her heart. Having lost her own home as a child, when the German bombs reduced it to nothing more than dust, Chewy's fear is all too familiar to her. Can Barby help Chewy to heal from the traumas of his past? And will saving Chewy help Barby to come to terms with her own past?
