'Exquisite, smartly paced whodunit set in turn-of-the-century Paris' Publishers Weekly

The victim is Sophie Monterant: a young actress who is already challenging the divine Sarah Bernhardt for the finest roles. Inspector Gautier visits the theatre to see Sophie at the first night of Dame aux Camélias, but the first night is also to be her last: after the curtain fall, Sophie eats a poisoned chocolate and dies.

Gautier is immediately on the case and his investigation takes him to the upper echelons of Parisian society, including the blue-blooded Comte de Limousin and the Minister for the Beax-arts, who is likely to become the next president of France. Gautier's impertinence enrages Courtrand, the director of the Sûreté, but what is Courtrand himself concealing?

In a quiet village surrounded by centuries-old woods and the imposing Italian Alps, a series of violent assaults take place. Police inspector and profiler Teresa Battaglia is called back from the city when the first body is found in the woods, a naked man whose face has been disfigured and eyes gouged out. Teresa quickly realises that the killer intends to strike again, and soon more victims are found - all having been subjected to horrendous mutilations. When a new-born baby is kidnapped, Teresa's investigation becomes a race against the clock...But Teresa is also fighting a different kind of battle: a battle against her own body, weighed down by age and diabetes, and her mind, once invincible and now slowly gnawing away at her memory...Something devastating has taken place here in these mountains. Something that requires all my investigative abilities. My name is Teresa Battaglia, I am a police chief inspector, specialised in profiling, and I walk through hell every day. It's not my gun, nor my uniform: my real weapon is my mind. Yet my mind is failing me. Not my body, weathered by the passing of time, nor my tormented heart. My name is Teresa Battaglia, I have a secret that I dare not reveal even to myself, and for the first time in my life I am afraid".Read by Anna Bentinck(p) Orion Publishing Group 2019

Excellent second novel featuring Yorkshire Detective Constable Karen Sharpe. The daughter of a Bradford judge is kidnapped and a massive, round-the-clock investigation begins. Knowing the chances of Sophie Kenyon surviving will diminish dramatically after the first twenty-four hours, Detective Chief Superintendent John Munro begins to crack under the pressure of holding together an enquiry swamped with leads. Meanwhile, DC Karen Sharpe is pursuing her own single-handed enquiry into historic child abuse allegations: Pamela Mathews says a local MP raped her ten years before. The task of finding corroboration looks hopeless, but Sharpe keeps at it - anything rather than face up to her own tangled personal life, living with a man she doesn't love and caring for a child who thinks she is her aunt. The truth is more complex and frightening, leading back to still unresolved events from a year before.Karen's enquiry uncovers connections with the kidnapping, and, in an explosion of violence and bloodshed, Karen is left fighting not just to find Sophie, but to save herself. Why readers love John Connor:'A first-rate thriller with a terrific climax.'
