The Dawning Light

By Randall Garrett and Robert Silverberg

An SF Gateway eBook: bringing the classics to the future.

The Earthmen came to Nidor and the most important thing they brought with them was - change.

Change in old-age ways of living. Change in a culture that had been static for centuries. But they were not unopposed for there was a strong underground reactionary movement which believed that the planet was destined to disappear completely into violent chaos - unless something was done about it.

After a meteor explosion, Rikardon wakes in a new body-and in a strange desert land named Gandalara, where a sacred gem known as the Ra'ira grants its owner the power to rule-or to destroy... Victory is sweet-but for Rikardon and Tarani, it is all too brief. Although they have retrieved the sword of the Kings from the lost city of Kä, a savage battle with the vineh mars their journey back to Raithskar. These ape-like creatures were once controlled through the power of the Ra'ira. Now they pose a threat both to the cat-like sha'um and humanoid Gandalarans. To restore order, Rikardon and Tarani must travel to Eddarta, where Tarani can use the Ra'ira against the increasingly vicious vineh. First she must face her treacherous brother, Indomel, and convince the Council to name her High Lord in his place. Indomel will not take such betrayal lightly, but another danger is about to reveal itself-a sinister and ambitious traitor who has been hiding in plain sight all along.

For Ricardo Carillo, taking over the life of the swordsman Markasset on the desert world of Gandalara had its compensations: a strong young body, a beautiful fiancee, and a mighty telepathic warcat named Keeshah, who obeyed his every command. It also had its problems. Markasset had many enemies, and one was out for blood. So Ricardo and Keeshah left Raithskar to join the Sharith - the warrior brotherhood of sha'um cat-riders. Musings and Meditations

Robert Silverberg
Authors:
Robert Silverberg

Presenting acclaimed essays from one of contemporary science fiction's most imaginative wordsmiths, this collection shows that Robert Silverberg's nonfiction is as witty and original as his fiction and full of acute observations and matter-of-fact insights. Whether he is discussing science fiction, history, cultural effects, science, or writing, Silverberg is always exploring new territories. As in his fiction, no cultural icon escapes his scrutiny, including fellow writers such as Robert Heinlein, Arthur C. Clarke, H. P. Lovecraft, and Isaac Asimov. Delightfully wicked commentaries on the concepts of thoughtcrimes, space exploration, the ancient Antikythera Computer, and the universal translator in science fiction fill these essays, many of which were originally published as columns in Asimov Science Fiction magazine.

Lest We Forget Thee Earth

Robert Silverberg
Authors:
Robert Silverberg

A hundred thousand years ago, there had been a planet called Earth. It had been a proud world ruling a thousand vassal stars, but its stellar empire had turned upon and annihilated their conquerors, and wiped the name of Earth from the maps of space. But Earthmen still survived . . . a strange race of worldless men and women, by tradition advisers to rulers, but never themselves ruling. Wanderers through myriad planets, their origin was a half-forgotten legend. That was the situation when a strange quirk of fate sent Earthman Hallam Navarre on an interstellar wild goose chase. He had to bring back a strictly mythical treasure to his alien ruler, or die.

In the far future, Earth is about to be swallowed by a black hole in this sweeping SF epic from one of the masters of the genre. In a time so far from our own that we cannot comprehend it, humanity has spread amongst the stars and changed in more ways than we can count. But they have never forgotten their birthplace - Earth. But now Earth stands on the brink of catastrophe, at risk of being swallowed by a black hole. One man, Hanosz Prime, ruler of his world, is determined to visit Earth before it is destroyed. His abdication from his throne and his wanderlust are to prove the beginning of a much longer journey - one that will see him fall in love, meet the Oracles of Earth and perhaps, if he is very lucky, provide a means to save the cradle of humanity.Originally started by Robert Silverberg more than 20 years ago but never completed, Hanosz's story is taken up by Alvaro Zinos-Amaro. Silverberg hand-picked Zinos-Amaro to complete the book, and provided notes and guidance.
