WINNER of the ANTHONY AWARD for Best Debut, the SHAMUS AWARD for BEST FIRST P.I. NOVEL. the MACAVITY AWARD for Best First Novel; SHORTLISTED FOR THE 2017 EDGAR AWARD and STRAND CRITICS AWARD.

East Long Beach. The LAPD is barely keeping up with the high crime rate. Murders go unsolved, the elderly are being mugged, children go missing. But word has spread: if you've got a case the police can't - or won't - touch, Isaiah Quintabe will help you out.

They call him IQ. He's a loner and a high school dropout, his unassuming nature disguising a relentless determination and a fierce intelligence. His clients pay him whatever they can afford, a new set of tyres or some homemade muffins. But now he needs a client who can pay. And the only way to that client is through a jive-talking, low-life drug dealer he thought he'd left behind. Then there's the case itself. A drug-addled rap star surrounded by a crew of flunkies who believes his life is in danger; and a hit man who even other hit men say is a lunatic. If he solves this case, IQ can put right a mistake he made long ago. If not it won't just be the hit man coming after him ...

Biographical Notes

Joe Ide grew up in South Central Los Angeles. His favourite books were the Conan Doyle Sherlock Holmes stories. The idea that a person could face the world and vanquish his enemies with just his intelligence fascinated him. Joe went on to earn a graduate degree and had several careers before writing IQ, his debut novel, inspired by his early experiences and love of Sherlock. Joe lives in Santa Monica, California.

One of the most original thrillers of the year . . . [A] sometimes scary, often whimsical, off-the-wall delight . . . Joe Ide has that rarest of writerly skills - a wholly unique voice, one that is at once irreverent and compelling, moving and incisive. IQ will become a reader favorite — Gregg Hurwitz, author of ORPHAN X
I don't know how fast Joe Ide writes, but from now on he'll have to write faster. Everyone who reads IQ will be clamoring for the next book, and for the one after that. This is one of the most intriguing - and appealing detective characters to come along in years — Carl Hiaasen, author of SCAT

Welcome to Hell?

John McManus
Authors:
John McManus

Whenever people in Britain talk about Turkish football, they don't tend to talk about camaraderie, hospitality and humour. They mention banners proclaiming 'Welcome to hell'. Or Leeds United fans stabbed to death on an Istanbul street. If they do consider the football, then it's not for long. The Turkish league is viewed as an elephant's graveyard for players and managers past their prime: Dirk Kuyt, Graham Souness, Didier Drogba, Robin van Persie. But Graham Souness has faded from memory for most Turkish football fans, and Turkish teams regularly compete at the latter stages of European competition. There is clearly a gap between perception and reality. So what is Turkish football really about? Through visits to far-flung clubs, encounters with characterful players and experiences at riotous matches, John McManus makes the case for defining football in Turkey by more than thuggery and washed-up superstars. From the elite training facilities of Istanbul to dusty pitches on the Anatolian plain, Welcome to Hell? offers a unique take on this rich, funny and alluring football culture, at once both familiar and miles apart from the game in Britain.

Waiting for the Albino Dunnock

Rosamond Richardson
Authors:
Rosamond Richardson

'A beautiful book' Tim Birkhead, author of BIRD SENSE'A glorious, beautifully written pilgrimage into the soaring world of birds' Bel Mooney, DAILY MAILWritten by a beginner-birdwatcher with the freshness and passion of a convert, WAITING FOR THE ALBINO DUNNOCK explores the world of birds through the seasons of a single year. It describes encounters with particular birds in the landscapes of East Anglia where the author is rooted. Occasional journeys farther afield take the reader to truly wild places in the Outer Hebrides and Eastern Europe. Yet the ordinary experience of birdwatching is also far more than just that. The beauty of birds has the power to change lives, as it did the author's, and as in the case of the all-but-legendary snow leopard, it is more about the search than the result.Personal and elegiac in tone, the writing is an unusual combination of prose poems based on the actual experience of seeing a specific bird for the first time, woven with elements of science and wisdom traditions, ornithology (and its punning counterpart ornitheology), mythology and philosophy, taxonomy and history, literature and folklore, conveying the wider picture of what it means to be human in relationship to nature. WAITING FOR THE ALBINO DUNNOCK explores the degree to which wildness is embedded in the human psyche and how beauty is central to our mental and emotional wellbeing, while highlighting the careless damage we are inflicting on the natural world.
