The White Devil

'An intelligent, bristling ghost story with a stunning sense of place', Gillian Flynn, author of Gone Girl

By Justin Evans

  • Paperback
  • £7.99

'Want a good English ghost story to read by the fire on a cold winter night? This tale of a malevolent ghost haunting a troubled American student at Harrow will fit the bill. It gathers you in lovingly, then takes you in a strangler's grip with its escalating horrors' STEPHEN KING

Do you believe in ghosts?

Fleeing expulsion and the death of a close friend, Andrew Taylor is sent to spend his final year at the prestigious public school Harrow. It is an eccentric place, a rambling ancient building filled with the sons of the rich and famous, and Andrew feels distinctly out of place

Andrew bears a striking resemblance to Lord Byron, a former pupil of Harrow - and that is when the trouble begins. He senses a malevolent presence, and when a classmate dies, his fears become all too real. Then Andrew discovers some old letters hidden in a bricked-up basement, which hint at a secret history buried in the school's past. But what is the link between these letters and the strange events that are happening at the school now and is he also in danger?

The Light of Evening

Edna O'Brien
Authors:
Edna O'Brien

Edna O'Brien returns to the world of her debut novel, The Country Girls, in an inspired account of a dying mother and her daughterFrom her hospital bed in Dublin, the elderly Dilly awaits the visit of her daughter, Eleanora, from London. The epochs of her life pass before her; emigrating to America in the 1920s, a romantic liaison she had there, the destiny that brought her back to Ireland, and her marriage. She also retraces Eleanora's precipitate marriage to a foreigner, and Dilly's heart-rending letters sent over the years in a determination to reclaim her daughter.Eleanora's visit does not prove to be the glad reunion that it might have been and, in her sudden departure, she leaves behind the secret journal of their stormy relationship. The Light of Evening is a novel of dreams and broken dreams but, at its core, is the realisation that the bond between mother and child is unbreakable, stronger even than death.

The Complete Western Stories

Elmore Leonard
Authors:
Elmore Leonard

A bull's-eye of a short fiction collection that spans the master's career. In 1950, fresh out of college and keen to make his name as a writer, Elmore Leonard decided he needed to pick a market, a big one, which would give him a better chance to be published while he learned to write. In choosing between crime and Westerns, the latter had an irresistible pull - Leonard loved movies set in the West. As he researched deeper into settings, Arizona in the 1880s captured his imagination: the Spanish influence, the stand-offs and shoot-outs between Apache Indians and the US cavalry. This is a fantastic collection of over five decades' worth of stories.

Down By The River

Edna O'Brien
Authors:
Edna O'Brien

A controversial novel which challenges the moral standing of the Roman Catholic church in IrelandDOWN BY THE RIVER begins, deceptively, in an idyllic rural setting somewhere in Ireland. By the end, its consequences have addressed and divided the political and judicial fabric of the nation.A crime of passion results in an emotional battlefield for one and all, with opposing factions taking militant sides. In the centre, a young girl struggles with the conflicts of mind and body, the teaching of her faith and her mounting bewilderment at what she might do. This is her rite of passage, a stark progress from the role of child to that of woman; an initiation into terror and beyond it to wisdom.
