Homemade Takeaways

How to Make Your Favourite Takeaway . . . But Better

By Rob Allison

  • Hardback
  • £18.99

A collection of homemade and mouth-watering recipes inspired by Britain's favourite takeaways.

From burger joints to pizza parlours, our towns and cities sparkle with the neon lights of takeaways. But among the deliciously exotic aromas of frying noodles, rotating meats and simmering spices, linger the toxic combinations of salt and chemicals that cause heart burn, obesity and diabetes.

HOMEMADE TAKEAWAYS injects the nation's favourite takeaways with new inspiration by recreating them using fresh produce and proper cooking methods. This is by no means a health book or a diet book, but by simply being able to control the quality of ingredients you use to cook the recipes, this book will make infinitely healthier food than you will find in any takeaway. Rob Allison uses his wealth of experience in the food industry to create mouth-watering and flavoursome food for any occasion.

Biographical Notes

Since falling in love with cooking as a Stagiere in a Parisian hotel, Rob Allison has collaborated with numerous authors on hugely successful cookbooks, including THE ULTIMATE STUDENT COOKBOOK and Gok Wan's GOK COOKS CHINESE. A genuinely brilliant idea for a book and beautifully executed to boot. — Nigella Lawson
DIY takeaways sound counter-intuitive - surely the one good thing about a takeaway is the fact that someone else has made it for you. But what if you live in the sticks, a 30-minute drive from your nearest fast-food joint, and fancy a hamburger? Homemade Takeaways provides the answer. It's an inspired collection of 100 recipes recreating late-night addictions such as massaman curry, margherita pizza, doner kebabs, Cornish pasties, miso soup and crispy duck. — Carolyn Hart, Daily Telegraph
Takeway - a word to make taste buds happy. if only we could create those flavours at home... Well now we can, thanks to Homemade Takeaways, a new cookbook by Rob Allison. Making chow mein or kebabs at home means they're (a little) better for you and will save you money. But don't just take our word for it, fan Nigella Lawson has posted the book cover on Instagram. And apologies in advance to your local chicken shop, once you've made the chicken wings, you won't go back. — Jenny Stallard, Metro

Piet enlists two Xhosa men to lead him into the magical forest of Gwadana, in search of a fabled tree. He needs precious wood, but he doesn't want to pay for it. The Natives Land Act has just abolished property rights for the majority of black South Africans, and whole families have been ripped apart. As Piet's charm, charisma and appetite for risk lead him far beyond the safety of the privileged white world, he does not comprehend the enormous price of the lies he has told, nor where they will lead him . . .

Whispering Hope - Kathleen's Story

Kathleen Legg, Steven O'Riordan
Authors:
Kathleen Legg, Steven O'Riordan

"At the conclusion of my discussions with one group of the Magdalene Women one of those present sang 'Whispering Hope'. A line from that song stays in my mind - 'when the dark midnight is over, watch for the breaking of day'.Let me hope that this day and this debate heralds a new dawn for all those who feared that the dark midnight might never end."- Taoiseach Enda Kenny's State apology to the Magdalene women. On 19 February 2013 the Irish Taoiseach Edna Kenny apologized to the women who had been incarcerated in Ireland's Magdalene laundries. And, in the audience, listening patiently for the words she'd been fighting to hear was Kathleen Legg.?For Kathleen was only 14 years old when she was confined at St Mary's Stanhope Street School in 1949. The harrowing physical and psychological abuse she endured in the institutions, run on behalf of the State, led to a lifetime of shame and secrecy.??Now, in WHISPERING HOPE, Kathleen tells her story for the first time. Her fight for justice and forged friendships with other survivors has enabled her to move forward and have her voice heard in this immensely powerful narrative that shines a light on a dark chapter in Ireland's history.??Inspirational and moving, this is the story of a remarkable woman brave enough to confront her past and strong enough to not let it define her.
