The Killing Season

Carter Blake Book 1

By Mason Cross

  • E-Book
  • £P.O.R.

For fans of Lee Child and James Patterson, THE KILLING SEASON is a fast-paced American thriller with a central character who could give Jack Reacher, Alex Cross and Jason Bourne a run for their money.

The first thing you should know about me is that my name is not Carter Blake. That name no more belongs to me than the hotel room I was occupying when the call came in.

When Caleb Wardell, the infamous 'Chicago Sniper', escapes from death row two weeks before his execution, the FBI calls on the services of Carter Blake, a man with certain specialised talents whose skills lie in finding those who don't want to be found. A man to whom Wardell is no stranger.

Along with Elaine Banner, an ambitious special agent juggling life as a single mother with her increasingly high-flying career, Blake must track Wardell down as he cuts a swathe across America, apparently killing at random.

But Blake and Banner soon find themselves sidelined from the case. And as they try desperately to second guess a man who kills purely for the thrill of it, they uncover a hornets' nest of lies and corruption. Now Blake must break the rules and go head to head with the FBI if he is to stop Wardell and expose a deadly conspiracy that will rock the country.

Slick, fast-paced and assured, THE KILLING SEASON is the first novel in the gripping new Carter Blake series.

Down There In Darkness

George Turner
Authors:
George Turner

Two men, one of them a policeman, are investigating a death involving a large international genetic engineering corporation. They become bothersome to the corporate owners and are taken out of action - not by being killed, but by being put to sleep for hundreds of years. But this may be a fate worse than death. They awaken to a distant future in which contemporary industrial civilization has been "cleansed" from the earth and what humanity survives is learning to live a very low-technology lifestyle, being bred eugenically to this life. This cleaning was done on purpose, an international plot by the rich and powerful who in fact rule the world - and who, in this distant future, are dying off. This is a complex and morally tortuous vision, and Turner's characters find it nearly impossible to adapt without killing someone, perhaps even themselves.

My kind of woman.' C.J. Tudor, Sunday Times bestselling author of The Chalk Man'I was swept away by this punchy, pacy thriller with its sharp characterisation and confident plotting. I devoured it in a single day. I particularly loved Madison's fabulously chain-smoking, hyper-feminine sharpness. There were so many things done well here - the presentation of domestic abuse, dysfunctional families, the uneven dynamic of female friendships that border on bullying - so much to enjoy. So looking forward to the next one.' Helen Callaghan, author of Sunday Times bestseller Dear Amy'Tough and uncompromising, I, Witness had me totally gripped. I'm looking forward to hearing more from PI Madison Attalee.' Alex Lake, author of Killing Kate, After Anna and Copy Cat'I couldn't put I,Witness down. A hugely accomplished novel with a dark, sad story at its heart - the characters are so well drawn that I felt every twist along with them as Mackay expertly manipulates the reader.
